This business with Liam Fox is a sad one. I dont know about you but I dont (or didnt, when I was working) invite my friends on business trips. But I did ask Doug to come with me(at least at the beginning of our relationship, just before I finished work I loved going away cos I was glad of a break!) . Now, sometimes I try and think of ways that we can all come on a trip with him. We never do of course as we can never think of a way of it being any cheaper than a normal holiday so whats the point?
All politicians are corrupt – thats a given. Its not really their fault, power corrupts. In an ideal world, we’d find a way around it but until then we should stop being surprised by it. Liam Fox used his contacts, influence, whatever to fund his friend coming on his business trips. I know nothing about Liam Fox (who’d be interested in politicians?) but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he and his friend did not have any ulterior motives other than they couldnt otherwise afford to go away together.
Now then, lets re-wind the story and pretend that Liam Fox has “come out” as gay and has married his “friend”. They are now living happily together as husband and….er…. husband. Liam Fox needs to go on a business trip. For politicians, its seems “normal” to go away with your wife – think Michele Obama, Samantha Cameron and so on. So Liam Fox can either take his partner legitimately or decide – actually Ill leave him at home cos Ive seen quite enough of him this week.
Even in our open and accepting society its very sad that someone would rather scheme and manipulate and calculate than to admit to being homosexual.
errr Nick….I’m not sure about the whole Foxy covering up his sexual preferences by pretending to be corrupt, in fact i’m not sure that he is either. My inkling is that he is much more likely to have helped his best friend (yes it is possible to have a male BFF without having to sleep with him!) get a foot up in his stuttering career(s) ….Werity has appeared to gain much more than Foxy out of this sorry tale. Although, as a very well educated geographer, Werity is probably in a better position to ‘advise’ Foxy than the ‘neutral??’ governmental advisors. Quite honestly, whose guidance would you trust more? that of your lifelong best friend (but maybe not companion…) or a group of self interested governmental lackies??
In summary, is it not sadder that the public are being led to believe that Foxy may in fact be gay rather than corrupt or worse still, innocent enough to make a catalogue of ill advised errors and then not own up to them all straight away in an attempt to preserve his fledgeling career and the improving reputation of his undeserving party.
Gay? Corrupt? Mistaken in his decisions? whichever I’m not convinced that he set out to mislead anybody….at the beginning at least.

Gotta love technology for allowing a stimulating intellectual debate with your next door neighbour.
Interesting point. I must admit I hadnt thought of that. Maybe because I dont have any friends (ahh poor me!) whose opinion I trust that much. I dont think I would even trust Doug’s opinion that much.
Personally I think the media is being very careful NOT to allege that Liam Fox is gay. (At least what I have seen anyway, but I dont often read a paper or listen to anything other than BBC or Sky – Im much to busy with housework, Lol!)
OK lets assume that his friend – I cant remember his name, Adam? Adam is “just” there to give advice/opinion. Well couldnt Liam Fox have employed him as such – paid or otherwise? But no, he’d rather find ways around that – presumably to avoid the “gay” label or of being accused of nepotism (sp?). Again – better to be corrupt than gay.
Again, I know much more about QVC and the antics on jewellerymaker.com to know the details of the case but my understanding is that there was no personal gain from Liam Fox and he is a fine upstanding politician whose career is ruined by some bad choices. I just cant understand why he did it and my only conclusion is that he preferred to hide his sexuality (or the false inference of his sexuality). THAT is what I find sad. I couldnt care less whether he was hetrosexual, homosexual, metrosexual, monosexual, transexual or asexual. Id much rather he be good at his job, which he was not because he was much more concerned with scheming and calculating how to get his friend free trips abroad.
