The royals want to invest £2 million into mental health improvements.

So this morning on Sky News they were talking about mental health and the presenter said “how important talking is to resolve the problem”.

A million times a day I see people comment ‘here if you want to chat’ when someone posts “I’m feeling blue” (or some such equivalent). Like that’s helpful.

Bollocks.

Talking is the absolute last thing anyone suffering from poor mental health wants to do.

When you have poor mental health you want to curl up into a ball. Some might want to die. Some might think themselves unworthy of your time. Some might worry about what you might think if they actually told you what’s in their head.

But the absolute last thing they want to do is talk.

Offering to listen is like suggesting you go together for a walk to fix their broken leg.

I’m a sufferer of anxiety and depression. Im not an expert by any means but I have a little bit of knowledge. I know things because ive spoken to other people. I know things because Ive been on talking therapy.

Talking does help.

But not in the way those ‘helpful’ people are suggesting. You cant save someone over a coffee. Your one hour chat isnt going to cure them.

The type of talking that is needed is the relentless, ongoing talking that shines a light on the whole ‘mental health’ issue.

We need it to be in the school curriculum. We need it to be in every TV show. We need it to be in every news article. We need to talk about it so much we’re sick to death of it.

Do you go on and on about your friend having a headache? No. They have a headache, they get some medication and its resolved. Or they have a regular headache and you know how to help them to work around it. Its just life.

Thats what we need mental health to be.

So boring you just get on with fixing it.

I have depression. I know its rearing its head again. Im trying to find the time to get it sorted (because the NHS is shit when it comes to everyday problems).

No I dont want to talk about it.

But i want to tell you about it every day so you’ll go and get yourself sorted out because I recognise the symptoms: you may not because no one talks about it.

Lets talk about mental health.

Lets just not talk about mine.
