Don’t get me wrong, I agree with the verdict. One man killed another one, there has to be some consequence to that.
But I can’t help feeling a little bit sorry for that white man (I don’t want to name him). A world’s contempt for racist behaviour all riding on his small inconsequential shoulders. Because are we truly saying he did what he did completely in isolation?
Now, the police force can write him up as one bad egg. Nothing to do with us guv’nor.
Now, the Judiciary system can pat itself on the back and point and say “See! The system works! Justice was served and we’re not racist at all.
But what about all the others? What about all the people of minority groups whose names aren’t shouted across the world’s media? What about all the others who the system does fail because of the colour of their skin or the size of their bank balance? What about all the racial micro aggressions that happen everyday in every corner of the world? They don’t go away today.
Yes. Some justice was served for George Floyd today. But let’s not wipe our hands and put this incident to bed; back behind closed doors where we who are privileged cannot see it.
Let’s continue to shout: we STILL need justice for ALL the George Floyds.
